The School of Irrigation conducts research and educational programs supporting the Texas Irrigation Industry. It is administered through the Texas AgriLife Extension and the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Texas A&M University.

In 1994, the school was established to promote landscape irrigation auditing and management in Texas through training and auditor certification. In 1998, we began offering training programs and courses for Water District Personnel.

To date, the School of Irrigation has provided educational opportunities to over 2500 individuals, certifying over 500 Texas Landscape Irrigation Auditors. We seek to provide quality irrigation education through a variety of courses, with new ones under development to meet the changing needs of the irrigation industry.

New Courses Being Offered This Summer

Advanced Irrigation CAD (8 Hours CEU):

This course is designed to provide instruction to students with prior CAD experience. The course will provide fast paced in-dept instruction of CAD software. Students will gain a functional knowledge of CAD software, and be able to use the software to design an irrigation system for a typical, large residence. Topics include the menu system of CAD software, use of the sprinkler database for selecting and locating heads, completing site drawings, assigning zones, manual and automatic pipe sizing, hydraulic calculations, and producing material and cost estimates. The course will place extra emphasis on sprinklers databases and material takeoff lists.

Weather and Sensor Based Irrigation Controllers (8 Hours CEU):

This course will provide instruction on weather and sensor based irrigation controllers as well as irrigation scheduling concepts. Students will learn how ET based controllers produce an irrigation schedule using different technologies and will be given hands-on programming and software instruction. Topics include ET controller bench testing protocols and procedures. Course will include detailed instruction on how to perform water balance calculations for landscapes as well as catch can type auditing with emphasis on several less time intensive methods. Topics include determining water requirements for landscapes and scheduling concepts.
